A bit of background.
I came up with this script because I wanted to write about a subject that I am familiar with. That way I can really control it and make it as simple as possible. To me, it’s a beautiful script that’s a snapshot of the relationship between a black father and son, one that I have seen time and time again in my community and therefore makes me think others will be able to relate to. I wanted to convey how that relationship may appear strained, but actually is still rooted in love and a deep longing to connect.
This film is shot in two different worlds. One is what I’d like to title a “thought world”, which is an insight into the Son’s mind state and take place in his head. The second is one I’d like to title the “physical world”, which is where events are actually taking place.
I felt presenting the film in the boy’s head or rather, “thought world” too, will really immerse the audience into the themes I’d like to explore surrounding the effects of external circumstances on our mental health. Those include, things not appearing to be what they actually are, anxiety, fear, anticipation, vulnerability and worry.
The film is set in the wake of an event that happened before the film begins.
