Rebuking a Demon

“And rebuking him, the demon went out and the boy was healed at once.” Matthew 17:18

There are more than 19 accounts mentioning Jesus and the disciples casting out demons in the gospels.

These portions of scripture are often a little bit uncomfortable for all of us, and the idea of someone having a demon is not very pleasant. The media and movies like the ‘Exorcist’ and ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ have visuals of cold, violent and evil scenes that have compounded our fears of the demonic, but
Jesus is King and Lord over these spirits.

Over the last 23 years in ministry to homeless men, women and children on the streets in Northern Arizona we have met many who have had serious mental health problems. Almost all who have had demonic strongholds have had childhood abuse or rape, a point of entry.

The other grievous point of demonic entrance has been drug use and abuse which often is a behavior that people choose or utilize to stuff down their memories of pain and trauma. Or come in through rebellion to God’s ways in cultural values, music and choices.

Painting this picture gives us an understanding of the horrors of abuse and how it steals the life and identity of a child and then twists the character development of an adult. It also points out that as we obey God and repent of our choices He will deliver us from these strongholds.

If you ever are confronted with the manifestation of a demon, follow the words in scripture,
“the Lord Jesus rebuke you!” Or “In the name of Jesus Christ come out of him or her.”
Always asking the Serving King in humility, how He sees the person, and how does He want to minister to them. His ways are higher.
