The image of the “black dog” has always been expressed as melancholy, or stress, its associations with depression can be found in the poetry of the Roman poet Horace (c. 40BC) in which the sight of a black dog with pups was an unlucky omen. Furthermore, there is the emblem as devil in 16th century English folklore.
According to WHO’s report, depression has become one of the three major diseases of the new century, and will become second large global burden of disease by 2030 in its estimation. As a black death in the 21st century, the health effects of high mental stress have caused many lives and economic losses every year in the world, accompanied by serious social security costs suffered from premature death, self-harm and suicide.
“The Black Watchdogs” is the special mission-oriented occupation in the fictionally parallel universe where citizens suffer in a stressful and extremely society, it combats against anxiety and depression with social identity. On the basis of providing people with happiness, this conceptual creation aims at understanding the causes of mental state, anxiety, and depression from cognitive psychology aspect. It is meant to spark a debate on pursuing self-values under social expectation and self-cognition. How does social construction cause personal psychological confliction and affect the value of human beings internalization? What new medium might be incubated in our community for making contributions and influences on facing the crisis of high stress nowadays, or in the future?
