African Americans are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease compared to their non-Hispanic counterparts. In the past, there have not been mental health resources and support systems that are readily accessible throughout the African American community. Our program would like to change the current approach by working with Tarrant County area African American churches to provide support and education to families and caregivers. The program, called LEAP (Let’s Educate and Prevent), will allow us to provide more education to African American caregivers of those with Alzheimer’s/Dementia. LEAP is designed to empower caregivers by providing education, support, and tools to manage caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. We intend to use a holistic approach to meet this need by providing education in a church setting through a faith-based adaptation to the health education curriculum.
