I wanted to talk about mental health stigma, this is a huge topic, very broad because there are plenty misconceptions about various mental illnesses.
What is stigma? It’s an intolerance towards something, in this case mental illness, be it schizophrenia for an example. But not only intolerance, mostly, in my humble opinion, it’s a lack of knowledge mixed with false beliefs and wrong information. Also stereotypes, example: oh I heard about this one neighbour schizophrenic, he was weird and he attacked someone with an axe. Or a maniac bipolar guy… No wonder people fear mentally ill folks if such stories are spread everywhere. He told her, she told him, etc. its a closed circle. Fear and hostility developed because of misconceptions fuels false beliefs and therefore stigmatization.

How to break the stigma?
Talk, explain, spread
I do it for longer time here on Youtube and in real life, I simply talk about it. I talk about mental health, mental illness, I list criteria, symptoms, causes, treatment etc. of many mental disorders, I describe to others how it is in practice, in reality to be mentally ill, how it feels to be lets say schizophrenic, how I am scared more of people than people should be scared of me. If you give me a bad eye because Im weird I might get paranoid that you want to hurt me and I will be in defensive mode from now on. Dont do that guys. We have enough of our imagined terrors, we dont need real ones from so called normal people.
TALK TALK TALK
Describe, explain, spread legit information, erase the bullshit, tell stubborn people to shut up and listen, chase out stereotypes. Dont be scared, dont be ashamed of your mental illness, talk about it, explain it to people who dont have the knowledge you do. You gotta do it friends.
BREAK THE STIGMA GUYS
If we wont tell them then how will they know? Knowledge is key. Open discussions is a great tool. Opening the mind is possible in every case.
