This shows the first two season at the Growing Home Gardens in Southeast Philly. Started and run by Nationalities Service Center, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, City Harvest Program.
As a result of widespread enthusiasm among the Bhutanese and Burmese refugee communities, we have been able to achieve more than we could have imagined. There are now over 100 families with plots in the garden.
They produced and distributed thousands of pounds of fresh, culturally appropriate produce which was all taken home free of charge.
It has become a vibrant community space where we organize block parties with over 250 refugees and neighbors in attendance, mental health picnics, health workshops, halloween parties, cultural ceremonies, and much more.
