My name is Zoe. I’m a General Practice Nurse at Westgate Medical Practice in Dundee and I’ve been in the role for 2 years.

I believe the refocused role has come at the right time in the primary care setting.

I think it’s really important that the role of the general practice nurse is being examined.

The future will mean that GPNs will have to be working at a more advanced level in order to provide seamless, high quality care.

Our role is to work with and support patients to manage their long-term conditions effectively.

Our role is changing and because of this we will be working with different MDTs such as physiotherapists and mental health care workers in order to provide complex care to patients with different co-morbidities.

I am excited about these changes and working with these members of the MDT and as a generalist a wide knowledge base is required for this role.

I see the learning resource supporting this new refocused role for the future, as my career grows into more advanced practice along the lines of our new career structure developed by NES.

It will help me look at the gaps that I may have in my knowledge or in my practice.

Taking it in bite-sized chunks to work through these, which will lead to me providing better care for patients and leading my team to provide better care to patients as well.

I think it’s there to help us as general practice nurses to look at what our knowledge base is and where we may have any gaps in our theory.

We can use it work at pace that suits ourselves and at a time that suits us, and it’s a fantastic resource to help us with the revalidation process.
